Great Fun in the Powder
Area
lakes chalk full of untracked powder! We Launched from the
Devil Track Lake / Old Cook County Runway
Access area. Bright sunshine, windy and single digits, We planned to go west down to the
Lutsen Ski Hill area, then we realized there was too much
untracked powder to rip up. Around the parking area there were
snowbanks with virgin powder the other side. We shredded,
jumped, carved and fell off in the area for a half an hour. Brushed
our sleds and goggles off and hit the lake surface. We made it half
way down the lake and decided trail riding in the near zero temps, was
not as rewarding as the powder we were riding right by. For about two
hours we carved the powder snow and drifts in the middle of the lake.
It didn't take long and we were sweating and covered with snow. I was
lucky enough to fall off my sled in a slush area and filled my boots
and gloves with some nice slush. Even though it was blustery and bitter cold
throwing the sleds around was the ticket today. Maybe tomorrow too.
Boots are on the dryer and getting all my gear
dry for tomorrow.
These images are pretty
lousy from my cell phone, the nice digital camera I have took a dive
on the last Grand Portage ride in zero temps December 31st.
In most places on the
lake there was 1-3 feet of powder and drifts, that were very soft as
of today. There is also a pretty well packed trail system from the
launch to the main trail system on the west end of the lake to hit the
Expressway and the G Trail on the east end of lake. Devil Track Lake
is just under six miles long and about a mile wide.
When we stopped the
sleds sunk about a foot, and when we stepped off it was difficult to
stay from dropping into 2-3 feet of snow. In some places on the lake
there was also slush under the snow. Many area lakes have been slushy
this year.
Stay on the beaten path
if you don't want to ride in deep powder. Existing trails on lakes
with slush areas will freeze solid if the snow is packed down.
Hard to stay on the sled
when everything is cake with ice and snow.
My snowpants and boots
were covered with dingleberries. Ya know you've had fun when your
soaked and full of ice.
